1- How Often o you have to get a Smog Check?

Every 2 years when you renew your vehicle registration you must obtain a "smog certificate"―a printout of your vehicle's emissions test results. You must register your car within 90 days of your emissions inspection.

2- What Year is Smog Exempt in California?

Currently, smog inspections are required for all vehicles except diesel powered vehicles 1997 year model and older or with a Gross Vehicle Weight (GVWR) of more than 14,000 lbs, electric, natural gas powered vehicles over 14,000 lbs, hybrids

3- What Year Car does not need smog in California?

Also required that vehicles 30 years old or older be exempt from the Smog Check program starting in 2004. AB 42 established a brief rolling chassis exemption until it was repealed in 2006 where 1976 and newer vehicles were subjected to emission testing.

4- What is the Smog abatement fee in California?

Owners of vehicles six or less model years old will pay an annual smog abatement fee for the first six registration years instead of being required to provide a biennial smog certification. The registration renewal notice mailed to you by the department will indicate if a smog certification is required.

Selling Or Buying

1- I am buying a vehicle, do I need a Smog Check?

Section 24007 (b)(2) of the Vehicle Code states it is the responsibility of the seller to provide a valid smog certificate at the time of delivery of the vehicle. There is no provision in the law to sell a vehicle "as is." Therefore the seller is always responsible for the smog certificate even when selling "as-is". If you are buying a vehicle, make sure to ask the seller for a smog certificate. You will not be able to register your vehicle without it.

2- I am selling a vehicle, who is responsible for the Smog Check?

Section 24007 (b)(2) of the Vehicle Code states it is the responsibility of the seller to provide a valid smog certificate at the time of delivery of the vehicle. If a seller sells his/her vehicle without a valid smog certificate, the buyer may pay for any repairs necessary to get the car to pass the Smog Check and may end up taking the seller to Small Claims Court to recover their costs.

3- I am planning to register my vehicle as non-operational this time around. Do I still need a Smog Check?

No, the Smog Check is only for operational vehicles. However, if you miss your biennial Smog Check while vehicle is non-operational, you will be required to get a smog inspection prior to bringing the vehicle back to operational status.
